Meta description too short: what's the ideal length?

What it means
A meta description is a short HTML attribute that summarizes a page's content. Google doesn't enforce a hard character limit, but descriptions under 50 characters often appear truncated in search results.
Why it matters
Short descriptions hurt click-through rate because they don't communicate the page's purpose clearly. AI agents and crawlers rely on them to understand content scope quickly. A thin description also misses opportunities for keyword and semantic signals.
How to fix it
- Add a
<meta name="description" content="...">tag in the<head>of each page. - Aim for 50–160 characters; this is the range most search engines display fully.
- Ensure the description states the page's purpose in one to two sentences.
- Avoid duplicate descriptions across pages and remove filler phrases.
Example
<meta name="description" content="Running shoes."><meta name="description" content="Compare 25 running shoes for 2026 — cushioning, weight, and price, tested over 300 miles. Find your pair.">A two-word description wins no clicks. Use the space to sell the page and set expectations.
When it's not a problem
Short descriptions are acceptable when Google generates a strong snippet dynamically from page content. They're also fine for simple, single-purpose pages where the description already conveys the full intent.
How Crawlinx detects it
We count characters in the meta description. Under 50 characters trips this notice — the tag exists but is too thin to earn a useful snippet.
