What it means

The meta description in your page's <head> exceeds the length that search engines typically display in results. This means the text gets cut off, and visitors may see an incomplete summary of your page's content.

Why it matters

A truncated meta description can confuse users about what your page offers, lowering click-through rates. Google also frequently auto-generates snippets from page content when your meta description is less useful than what it can extract, which means you lose control over how your page is presented in search results.

How to fix it

  1. Keep your meta description between 120 and 160 characters for most devices.
  2. Ensure each page has a unique meta description that specifically describes that page.
  3. Place the most important information in the first 120 characters so it displays fully on mobile.
  4. Verify the meta description is in the <head> and not overridden by JavaScript rendering.

Example

Before — HTML
<meta name="description" content="We sell running shoes, trail shoes, walking shoes, and every kind of athletic footwear you could possibly imagine for men, women, and children, plus socks, insoles, laces, and a huge range of accessories at great prices with fast free shipping.">
After — HTML
<meta name="description" content="Shop running, trail, and walking shoes for the whole family. Free fast shipping on all orders.">

Google truncates desktop snippets around 155–160 characters. Put the hook in the first sentence.

When it's not a problem

This notice is often a false alarm when your meta description is longer but still effectively summarizes the page. Google has no hard character limit and will use your meta description whenever it better summarizes the page than its auto-generated snippet.

How Crawlinx detects it

We count characters in the meta description content. Over 160 characters trips this notice; the detail shows the exact length. Pages set to noindex are skipped.

FAQ

What is the ideal meta description length?
Roughly 120–160 characters. Google truncates desktop snippets around 155–160 and mobile a bit shorter, so keep the key message in the first ~120.
Does meta description length affect rankings?
No — the meta description is not a ranking factor. But a truncated or vague snippet lowers click-through, which is what you're optimizing here.
