Missing meta description: how to find and write one
Pages without a meta description let Google pick your snippet. Find every page missing a meta description and learn to write one that earns clicks.
What it means
A missing meta description means your page lacks a <meta name="description"> tag in the <head>. Google may generate one from your content, but it often picks a suboptimal snippet — sometimes just the first few lines of body text. That means the description shown in search results and used by AI agents may not match your intent.
Why it matters
Without a meta description, Google's crawler may misinterpret page purpose, especially when the first visible text is navigation or boilerplate rather than the actual content. AI agents that extract structured summaries for overviews often pull from the meta description when present, so its absence can cost you citations. Search results also tend to show shorter, less descriptive snippets, which reduces click-through rates even though the page itself is fine.
How to fix it
- Add a <meta name="description" content="A concise, unique summary of what this page is about." /> to the <head> of every page.
- Keep the description between 120 and 160 characters so it displays fully in search results without truncation.
- Ensure the description is unique per page — avoid reusing the same text across category pages or similar content.
- Validate that the meta description is present in the initial HTML response, not injected later by JavaScript.
When it's not a problem
This warning is a false alarm if your page is a thin landing page, a redirect, or a page where Google's auto-generated snippet clearly matches the content and purpose. It's also fine when the meta description is present but flagged due to length — Google has no hard character limit, and truncation is device-dependent rather than a ranking penalty.
