What it means

The <title> element is shorter than typical, usually under 50 characters. This is a notice, not an error — Google does not enforce a hard minimum length, but very short titles often lack descriptive context.

Why it matters

A short title can signal a half-empty page, an orphaned category, or a boilerplate template that was never filled in. Google rewrites titles that are half-empty, obsolete-dated, or mismatched, so a terse title may get replaced with a less useful one. Searchers and AI agents also use the title as a primary signal of page purpose, so brevity without substance can reduce click-through and context extraction.

How to fix it

  1. Add a descriptive phrase that reflects the page's actual purpose (e.g., replace "Products" with "Shoes — Running and Trail Models").
  2. Check that the title is unique per page and not a template default or placeholder.
  3. Ensure the title matches the page language and sits inside <head> as a single <title> element.

Example

Before — HTML
<title>Shoes</title>
After — HTML
<title>Running Shoes for Men & Women | Acme Sports</title>

A one-word title wastes SERP width and keyword reach. Describe the page and include your primary term.

When it's not a problem

This is fine when the page is intentionally minimal — a homepage with a brand name, a short landing page, or a page where the title is deliberately concise and still describes the purpose. It is also acceptable if the title is short but Google has not rewritten it and it performs well in search.

How Crawlinx detects it

We count characters in the trimmed title text. Under 15 characters trips this notice — usually a placeholder, a bare brand, or a single word.
