What it means

The <title> tag and the <meta name="description"> on this page contain the same or near-identical text, presenting the same string twice in the SERP: once as the headline and once as the summary. A description that merely repeats the title is unlikely to be shown by Google.

Why it matters

Meta descriptions are not a ranking signal, but they affect click-through rate. A useful description is a four-to-five-second pitch — what the user will find, why this page, sometimes a specific fact that earns the click. When the description duplicates the title, Google tends to override it with a passage pulled from the page body, so you lose control of the snippet, and the SERP slot is wasted showing the same phrase twice. A distinct description can materially lift CTR at the same ranking position.

How to fix it

  1. Write the meta description as a distinct sentence or two, not a restatement of the title.
  2. Target 120–155 characters; longer text is truncated in most SERP layouts.
  3. Include the primary keyword naturally — it is bolded in results when it matches the query.
  4. Add a differentiating claim: a number, a unique feature, a use-case specificity. Avoid filler like "Learn more" or "Click here".
  5. If your CMS auto-populates the description from the title field, override it per-page or fix the template to pull from a separate summary field.

When it's not a problem

On very short transactional pages — a login page, a payment confirmation, a 404 — an identical title and description rarely causes meaningful harm; Google simply overrides it. The notice matters most for content, product and category pages where a compelling description influences qualified clicks.
