Algorithm & spam updates

• May 2026 Broad Core Update Confirmed: rolled out 2026-05-21 → completed 2026-06-02 (~11–12 days). A big, "typical" powerful core update. YMYL heavily hit — health, finance, especially gambling ("ultra-YMYL"). Several sites dropped out of Discover entirely on the June 2 tremor. No recovery for Jan-2026 "commodity content" victims — core-update recovery only comes with a later update after genuine quality improvement. Speculative Google has NOT yet deployed a dedicated anti-AI-spam core mechanism (Grokipedia, 100% AI, surged in May). Vendor CTR/LCP percentages are unverified marketing.
• March 2026 Core Update Confirmed: 2026-03-27 → 2026-04-08; weaker; YouTube drove the greatest visibility loss.
• Feb 2026 Discover Core Update Confirmed.
• March 2026 Spam Update Confirmed: 2026-03-24 → 03-25 (<20h). June 2026 Spam Update Confirmed: ~2026-06-24 → 06-26. Important scoping Confirmed: these spam updates do NOT target link spam and do NOT enforce site reputation abuse — they hit on-page/content spam (scaled content, cloaking, doorways, sneaky redirects, scraped content, hidden text, expired-domain abuse). Parasite/host tactics dodged these two, but the policy still exists.
• June 19, 2026 "unconfirmed update" Speculative: community chatter (Black Hat World/WebmasterWorld) of black-hat drops while most volatility trackers stayed calm; never confirmed.

AI Mode / AI Overviews

• Google I/O 2026 (2026-05-19) Confirmed: Gemini 3.5 Flash is the default AI Mode model globally for everyone; AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users; the search box was redesigned for the first time in 25 years (accepts text/images/files/tabs); generative UI rolling out. Press framing Speculative: Google steering users from AI Overviews toward full AI Mode — a bigger publisher-traffic threat.

CTR / zero-click [CONFIRMED where noted]

• Pew (900 US adults' browsing data): traditional-result click in only 8% of AI-summary searches vs 15% without; clicks inside the summary = 1%; browsing ended after a summary page 26% vs 16%.
• Zero-click: 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click (early 2026), up from 60.45% in 2024 (SparkToro/Similarweb).
• CTR-drop studies (methodology-dependent): Ahrefs ~58% lower CTR with an AIO; Seer −61% organic; a Seer 2026 follow-up shows a possible stabilization (1.3%→2.4% rebound). Being cited inside an AIO = ~35% more organic clicks [CONFIRMED bright spot].
• So what: expect zero-click as baseline; optimize for citation, not just rank; diversify toward branded/transactional/comparison queries and direct/newsletter/community channels.

Search Console / indexing

• NEW gen-AI performance reports Confirmed: announced 2026-06-03; show impressions inside AI Overviews + AI Mode (+ Discover). Impressions only — no clicks/CTR/query data yet. Pair with GA4's new "AI Assistant" channel. Rolled to UK site owners first (CMA pressure).
• NEW opt-out toggle Confirmed: a GSC toggle blocks content from AI Overviews/AI Mode/Discover AI without affecting normal Search ranking (but forfeits AI impressions). For most sites, staying in is the default recommendation.
• Performance reports now support weekly/monthly aggregation + branded/non-branded filter.

Structured-data deprecations Confirmed

• FAQ rich results: stopped 2026-05-07; report/RRT support removed June 2026; API Aug 2026.
• Practice Problem (Quiz): removed Jan 2026. Dataset being phased out. Low-use SERP features retired (Nutrition Facts, Nearby Offers, bike-share, Doodle).
• No rush to remove valid deprecated markup (harmless, may feed AI entity understanding) — stop investing in it.

IndexNow (reference)

Free protocol to push URL create/update/delete to Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, Yep, Amazon (NOT Google). Shared endpoint https://api.indexnow.org/indexnow fans out to all. Host {key}.txt (8–128 chars [A-Za-z0-9-]) at root. Bulk POST ≤10,000 URLs/request, same host. Response codes: 200 (validated), 202 (pending), 403 (key mismatch), 422 (bad host/schema/>10k), 429 (rate-limited). Only ping on real changes (debounce; don't ping every build). Signals discovery priority, not ranking. Easiest paths: Cloudflare Crawler Hints, Rank Math (WordPress).
